How I tripped Into this Idea
After a decade-long deep dive into human consciousness, I found myself launching my next career as a VC, putting together my first deal for a little-known company at the time, Oura Ring.
MY THESIS WAS SIMPLE:
FIND COMPANIES THAT CAN MEASURABLY ELEVATE HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS.
In 6 days, I raised $1M when Oura was at a ~$25M valuation. I raised this money as a fund manager with a 2% management fee and a 20% carry. Essentially, I received 2% on all the money I raised (annually) and 20% on all the profit generated.Translation: If you raise $1M and your equity in the company 10X's, then that $1M is now worth $10M.The 'profit' is $9M, so as a fund manager, you would earn $1.8M.
It's an oversimplification, but this gives you a sense of how fund managers actually make money.
NOW HERE COMES THE SECRET SAUCE;
Half of the money was raised from health and wellness influencers, whom you've probably heard of, and who then became affiliates to help accelerate the company's growth.It was a win/win because they were able to draw out their cash through affiliate commissions while increasing their equity and the value of the company.
BUT THERE’S STILL MORE. I ALSO NEGOTIATED A SECOND DEAL WITH MY AGENCY.
We secured a paid retainer from the funds raised, with a bonus tied to performance. This regenerative approach, combining a fund manager role with an agency retainer, resulted in a deal structure that ensured continuous profit and growth for everyone involved.Fast forward to today, Oura is worth $5.2B, and our agency is still Oura's longest-standing vendor. (Win-win-win for everybody!) After this, we added a VC fund to our agency's offerings to ensure that they had the cash needed for the expansion they were facilitating.Then I leveraged my FIRST deal to raise a $10M fund to invest in companies like Oura, X.AI (Elon Musk’s AI company), Hedera, Bulletproof, Tripp, and Muse.
